Laser Cut Induction

Just before we broke up for Christmas, I decided to get inducted on his to use the laser cutter as thought it might help me in the future if I had to make anything using the laser cutter.

During the induction, we were told the Illustrator was the software to use in order to make designs compatible with the laser cutter, however the downside of it is that some fonts might not be available as the fonts available from the mac suites might be different from the ones used in the laser cutter room. There are different colours that indicate if you want to cut through, raster engrave or kiss cut a design. You can also use any materials on the laser cutter as long as they don't get caught on fire.

Connor Campbell (ItsNiceThat)

Connor Campbell, Junior Art director form ItsNiceThat had a talk today about his work in the company.

From Connor's talk, I received tips such as printing out small scale sizes of publication pages and laying them out on a mood board in order to make it easier for me to visualise how each page will look, which I thought might be helpful for my current research publication project. He also talked about the range of work his done from working for a high-tech audio company where he learnt skills such as product photography and very corporate skills, which also helped him with working with projects for ItsNiceThat. He also gave tips such as to always keep learning new skills, even if that means watching videos on Youtube.

Liv Sidall Talk

Yesterday, we got a chance to met and listen to a talk by Liv Sidall. Liv is a graphic design graduate from Kingston Uni, and worked with ItsNiceThat Mag. for four years and also Fought Trade as a magazine editor.

Liv gave us of tips and inspired us on possibly the route that we want to take in the future, as she mentioned how although she was a graphic student she didn't particularly know or get what she was doing and was more focused on everyone else work except from her, which got her an internship at ItsNiceThat Magazine and got to do what she wanted to do, while still involved in the design community. She also proved to be very resourceful of people, time and money, which made her work more enticing and interesting. She also told use her 'tire theory' which uses the metaphor of 'if you see someone with a broken down car waving their hands, you would less likely help then than when you see them already trying to fix their car' which she applies to 'if people are seeing you working hard on your won, they will most likely want to try and help you than when you just sit their say 'help me!', which I thought was quite inspirational!

I also got a chance to talk to Liv one to one in an individual session in which she gave me loads of advice and tips in my current brief.
